Noerr partner Jörg Menzer elected new Secretary-General of International Bar Association
From 1 January 2023, Jörg Menzer will be the new Secretary-General of the International Bar Association (IBA). The Noerr partner was elected to this office by the large majority of the membership organisation of the world’s largest lawyers’ organisation who met at the annual conference in Miami.
The IBA is the foremost international organisation of legal practitioners, bar associations, law societies and law firms. Since its founding in 1947, the IBA has grown to its present membership of more than 100,000 lawyers and law firms (including the leading 300 firms), as well as some 190 bar associations and law societies from more than 170 countries.
Jörg Menzer has been active in the IBA for many years and, in his role as Chair of the Section on Public and Professional Interest (SPPI), is already a part of the organisation’s management. The Noerr partner believes that the demands placed on the organisation – as the global voice of the legal profession – are greater now than ever: “Rule of law principles are coming increasingly under pressure. The IBA makes a valuable contribution in this area, in particular in relation to safeguarding the independence of our profession.”
Alexander Ritvay, co-managing partner at Noerr commented: “We are delighted at Jörg Menzer’s election as the Secretary-General of the IBA. Jörg and Noerr have championed the interests of the legal profession in many ways within the IBA over the past few years. The election result demonstrates clearly that Jörg Menzer is held in high esteem within the IBA.”
